SOMERSET, N.J. — More than 40 years after earning his Certified Public Accountant license, Brian D. Levine serves New Jersey business owners, families, and retirees by tackling an increasingly complex financial landscape through personalized accounting and tax services. Levine, founder of Brian D. Levine CPA, has spent decades advising clients on everything from tax preparation and business accounting to IRS representation, financial planning, and business consulting. Located on Easton Avenue in Somerset, his office manages accounts for individuals, entrepreneurs, nonprofits, and businesses of varying sizes throughout New Jersey and beyond. "I like speaking with people so they understand what's going on," Levine said during a recent interview. "We're not just filling out forms. We're helping clients make informed financial decisions."
A Career Built on Accounting and Finance
Levine's interest in accounting began with two lifelong strengths: mathematics and business. After graduating from Rutgers University with a bachelor's degree in economics and a minor in mathematics and computer science, he earned an MBA in Management with a concentration in Finance. He became licensed as a CPA in 1982 after completing the education, professional experience, and examination requirements established by New Jersey. His professional career included positions with CPA firms, consulting work and experience in the finance department of the Fortune 500 company, Todd Shipyards, before launching his own accounting practice. Initially preparing tax returns on a part-time basis, Levine gradually grew his client base before opening his accounting firm. Today, the practice includes accountants, bookkeeping support, and administrative staff serving clients throughout the year.
Serving Businesses at Every Stage
Levine's firm works with startups, established companies and entrepreneurs launching side businesses, as well as corporations generating millions of dollars in annual revenue. Services include individual and business tax preparation, bookkeeping, payroll support, financial statement preparation, loan package assistance, business consulting, sales tax reporting, trust and estate tax services, nonprofit accounting and business formation guidance. Rather than focusing solely on annual tax returns, Levine said he prefers helping clients develop long-term financial strategies. "We step back and ask if there's a better way to structure the business," he said. "Sometimes there is, and sometimes there isn't, but it's important to evaluate every opportunity available under the tax laws."
Helping Clients Resolve IRS Issues
One of the firm's specialized practice areas involves assisting individuals and businesses facing IRS or state tax authority problems. Levine said many taxpayers become overwhelmed after receiving notices from the IRS, but professional representation can often help clarify the situation and identify available options. Depending on a client's circumstances, the firm may assist with payment plans, “Offer in Compromise” applications, penalty abatements, or correcting IRS errors. "The earlier someone addresses a tax problem, the more options they usually have," Levine said. He noted that resolving tax issues often involves direct communication with the IRS while developing practical solutions based on each client's financial situation.
Financial Guidance Beyond Tax Season In addition to tax preparation, Levine advises clients on cash-flow management, business growth, financial projections and lending requirements. The firm regularly prepares financial statements and documentation needed for commercial loans and Small Business Administration financing. Levine also provides litigation support, helping attorneys and clients evaluate financial matters during legal proceedings. He said many business owners benefit from periodic financial reviews that identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce future tax liability. "We're always looking for legitimate ways to help clients save money," Levine said. "Sometimes it's how a business is structured. Sometimes it's retirement planning or other tax strategies."
Public Service Influenced Financial Leadership
Levine's financial expertise extended beyond private practice into public service. After becoming involved in local politics, he served on the Franklin Township Council before later serving multiple terms as mayor. His accounting background influenced his approach to municipal budgeting, emphasizing responsible spending while maintaining healthy financial reserves. Levine credited township staff and fellow elected officials for working together to strengthen Franklin Township's financial position during his tenure.
An Approach Centered on Communication Levine said one of the most meaningful compliments he ever received from a client eventually became the firm's unofficial philosophy. The client remarked that he was "the CPA you can talk to," a phrase Levine adopted because it reflected the atmosphere he wanted to create. Rather than overwhelming clients with technical accounting terminology, he believes financial professionals should explain complex issues in ways clients can understand. That emphasis on accessibility continues to shape the firm's approach as it serves individuals, families and businesses throughout New Jersey. As financial regulations and tax laws continue to evolve, Levine said his goal remains unchanged: helping clients understand their finances, comply with tax requirements and make informed decisions for the future.
